A Public Space welcomes submissions to the magazine from October 15–April 15. Work may be mailed to the Dean Street address above or submitted online through our Submittable page, where guidelines are also available. We are not currently accepting submissions for A Public Space Books. Please sign up for our newsletter to receive updates on submission periods.
A Public Space offers three writing fellowships annually to fiction and nonfiction writers who have not yet published a book-length work. Fellows are selected through an open application. The application period for the 2021 fellowships will be January 1-January 31, 2021. Guidelines will be posted in mid-December on our News page.
A Public Space offers editorial fellowships annually to aspiring editors. Fellows are selected through an open application each winter. More information about the editorial fellowship program is available here.
A Public Space accepts applications for summer internships. To be considered for a summer internship, please apply by March 15. The internship program provides practical experience in critical reading, research, copyediting, and fact-checking; marketing and publicity, including social media and events; and an overview of an independent nonprofit literary organization as well as an introduction to the publishing community. Applications can be found on our Submittable page.
A Public Space has partnered with Graywolf Press to publish books by contributors to the magazine, including: Karate Chop (2015), So Much for That Winter (2016), and Mirror, Shoulder, Signal (2018) by Dorthe Nors; Cities I’ve Never Lived In (2016) by Sara Majka; The Complete Ballet (2017) by John Haskell; and A Lucky Man (2018) by Jamel Brinkley.
From 2011–2017, A Public Space served as the co-publisher of Monkey Business International, an annual anthology showcasing the best of contemporary Japanese literature that developed out of a portfolio in the debut issue of A Public Space. Edited by Motoyuki Shibata, one of Japan’s most highly regarded men of letters, Monkey Business International relaunched under a new name, MONKEY New Writing from Japan, in 2020.
