Monday Memo

News September 17, 2018

This week we're talking about:
  • Jamel Brinkley, whose debut, A Lucky Man (Graywolf Press + A Public Space) has been long listed for the National Book Award in Fiction. The title story originally appeared in APS No. 22. As Victor LaValle noted, "Jamel Brinkley regularly finds ways to pierce through the dramatic and find the subtle and humane lurking within." Read his appreciation on our blog.
  • APS contributing editor Yiyun Li's Dear Friend, from My Life I Write to You in Your Life, published in France by Belfond, has been long listed for the Prix Médicis. The essay of the same title, which became the basis for the book, first appeared in APS. No. 19.
  • APS editor Brigid Hughes will be honored at CLMP's Night of a Thousand Small Publishers on November 13, and tickets are available now. Plus, save the date for A Public Space's first-ever benefit, happening at the Montauk Club in Brooklyn on December 6. Join our mailing list for first chance to buy tickets and more, soon.
  • On Saturday night, we hosted a party held by the Windham-Campbell Prizes, pictured above (credit: Beowulf Sheehan). Interested in an event rental here? Contact Lauren Cerand (lauren@apublicspace.org) to talk more.
  • Subscriber Stacy Mattingly, who recently moderated an event we hosted on new writing from Bosnia and Herzegovina as part of the Another Way to Say series, writes in to let us know about Translation Now: Conversations on the Art of Literary Translation, happening at Boston University at the end of the month. Attendance is free and open to all, with registration requested.
