S. J. Naudé grew up in South Africa, where he studied law; he practiced in New York City and London for many years before returning to South Africa to study creative writing at the University of Stellenbosch. The Afrikaans edition of his story collection The Alphabet of Birds (Alfabet van die voëls) was published by Umuzi (Random House Struik) and awarded University of Johannesburg Debut Prize and a South African Literary Award. His English translation of the stories will be published by And Other Stories later this year.
