Melissa Monroe teaches at the New School for Social Research. The author of a book of poems, Machine Language (Alef Books, 1997), she is interested in specialized language and the literary potential of jargon, and is currently working on a long poem about prehistoric trepanation, an operation to excise a piece of skull bone.
