Mario Bellatin was born in Mexico but studied at the University of Lima and had his first five novels published in Peru. His collected fiction has just been published by Alfaguara, and Chinese Checkers, a selection of three novellas is available in English from Ravenna Press. The story that appears in this issue is excerpted from a novel of the same title, published by Anagrama.
